What is Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY)?

PMJAY is also known as Ayushman Bharat Yojana is the world's most extensive health insurance scheme. Under this, once a health card is made, poor people can get Rs 5 lakh free treatment in any government or private hospital. If your age is between 16 and 59 years and you belong to an unserved or overlooked income group, you can apply for this scheme. Around 13,000 plus hospitals across the country have already been covered under this scheme.

When was PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) launched?

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, referred to as PMJAY, is a pioneer healthcare program launched on 23rd September 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. PMJAY is the world's largest health security scheme and strives to deliver a health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to poor and helpless households.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana was started with a vision to achieve universal health coverage for all. The Government and costs completely fund AB-PMJAY are shared between Central and State Governments in the ratio as per the extant directives issued by the Ministry of Finance. Another special feature of PMJAY i.e. it covers diagnostic costs, medical treatment, hospitalization, pre-existing illnesses and several critical ailments

Why was PMJAY(Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) launched?

The primary goals for launching PMJAY stood to assure complete coverage for catastrophic illnesses, reduce fatal out-of-pocket costs, improve admission to hospitalization care, reduce unmet requirements, and merge various health insurance schemes across the States.

From its inception, the PMJAY scheme has aimed to constantly develop and improve healthcare services in urban and rural areas where people are still deprived of healthcare benefits, especially those who are financially helpless. As per data disclosed till 31st March 2022, 17.9 crore individuals have been provided with Ayushman cards under Ayushman Bharat Yojna, and the scheme has reached the most vulnerable areas of society – the economically weaker citizens.

Features of (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) PMJAY scheme

  • This is the world's largest government-funded healthcare scheme, which benefits about 50 crore people.
  • Ayushman Bharat is one scheme aiming to provide health coverage to 10 crore families which will be Rs 5 lakh per year per family.
  • More than one thousand three hundred fifty-four health packages have been included in this plan.
  • The health package includes treatments like coronary bypass surgery, knee replacement surgery, and stenting.
  • Compared to the Central Medical Health Scheme; these treatments are provided at a 15% to 20% cheaper rate.
  • This plan provides a Cashless and Paperless claim facility.
  • You can avail in government hospitals or with empanelled private hospitals.
  • For eligibility in urban areas, 11 occupational criteria have been prescribed.
  • Aadhar Card is not mandatory to take advantage of the scheme.
  • You only have to prove your identity through Aadhaar, Voter ID or Ration Card.
  • Each scheme-affiliated hospital will have an "Ayushman Mitra Helpdesk", where beneficiaries can check eligibility and register for the scheme.
  • After getting the registration done, a QR code is given to all the beneficiaries, which will help identify the beneficiary.
